CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (April 22, 2025) — The Pickaway County Health Department is among 33 local health agencies across Ohio receiving state funding to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. The department was awarded $21,800 as part of a broader initiative totaling more than $650,000 in grants distributed statewide.

The funding, administered by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with the Ohio Department of Health, will support mosquito control programs that focus on surveillance, larval control, and the elimination of breeding grounds, such as stagnant water and illegal scrap tire piles.

“These grants are essential to help health departments around Ohio fight mosquito-borne diseases,” said Ohio EPA Director-Designate John Logue. “The funding provides education, outreach, and necessary equipment to better protect all Ohioans.”

In Pickaway County, the $21,800 will bolster ongoing efforts to mitigate the risk of illnesses like West Nile virus, La Crosse Encephalitis, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, all of which are spread through mosquito bites.

Since the mosquito control program began in 2016, over $9.2 million has been awarded to local communities to safeguard public health through prevention and education.
