CIRCLEVILLE – Three people were transported to area hospitals for injuries suffered in a rear-end collision Friday on U.S. Route 23 near Little Walnut Road.

According to Deputy Justin Schleich, Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred just before 8 p.m. when Heidi Carter, 39, of Chillicothe, was traveling northbound on U.S. Route 23 and attempted to pull through a turnaround in the median.

As she applied her brakes, Carter’s blue Dodge Caravan was struck from behind by a maroon Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Michael Ward, 46, of Pataskala.

A third vehicle, driven by Sara Ferguson of West Virginia, was struck by debris from the crash that cracked the windshield. Ferguson was uninjured in the accident, Schleich said.

Carter was transported to Berger Hospital for treatment of a head injury, he said, and a 7-year-old passenger in her minivan was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus for treatment.

Two other juvenile passengers with Carter, a 5-year old and an infant, were not injured in the crash, Schleich said.

Ward also was transported to Berger Hospital for treatment. He was cited for assured clear distance ahead and driving under suspension.

The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the South Bloomfield Police Department.

Emergency crews at the scene included Harrison Township, Scioto Township, Pickaway Township and the Circleville Fire Department.
