Man Killed in Three Car Accident on US 50

Chillicothe – The Chillicothe Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash which occurred at the intersection of US 50 and Lancaster Road. The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 P.M on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, and shut down the roadway intermittently for approximately three hours.
A 2005 GMC Terrain, driven by George Murphy Jr., 47 years-old, of Londonderry, Ohio, was traveling eastbound on US 50 and approaching the intersection with Jones Road and Lancaster Road. The GMC was also pulling a small trailer loaded with several items. A 2003 Kia Optima, driven by Alayna Hurley, 18, of Chillicothe, was traveling southbound on Jones Road and approaching US 50. Mr. Murphy failed to yield at the red light at the intersection and was struck by Ms. Hurley. Mr. Murphy’s vehicle and trailer struck a 2016 Kia Sorento, driven by Alois Bernard, 44, of Chillicothe. Mr. Bernard was northbound on Lancaster Road and waiting to turn left onto US 50. The GMC overturned and traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Kia Optima traveled off the eastbound side of US 50, east of Lancaster Road. The Kia Sorento remained on Lancaster Road.
Mr. Murphy succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His passengers, Yvonne Murphy, 40, and Gabberial Murphy, 18, both of Londonderry, suffered injuries and were transported to Adena Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Hurley sustained minor injuries and was also transported to ARMC.
Mr. Bernard and his passengers, Christina Bernard, 41, and a juvenile, both of Chillicothe, were not injured.
The Liberty Township Fire Department/Ems and Harrison Fire/EMS assisted at the scene. Motorists are reminded to wear their seatbelts.
