USA – A recent survey was published by energy.gov that suggest that the optimum temperature you should set thermostat setting is 78 degrees.

Suggestions were made that you can increase your temperature up to 4 degrees with no reduction in comfort if you are using ceiling fans and ventilating fans.

The Energy Saving tips report also suggested that most people run water heaters at too high of a temperature also suggesting setting water heaters to 120 degrees or the warm setting. This would save 18% on the energy saved in your home.

A recent report from Consumer reports reflected the government study and said you should invest in a programmable thermostat and set it to adjust during the day to save even more money. The report said you should set the temperature:

• 78° F when you’re home
• 85° F when you’re at work or away
• 82° F when you’re sleeping

Consumer reports also suggested using ceiling fans and box fans to beat the heat and save money.
