Dirty Spoon Report: Pickaway Restaurant Inspections

PICKAWAY – Report monthy done by board of health on restaurants and facilities that handle and serve food. Critical items are listed in red.

Several locations were checked and did not have any Inspection issues they are:

Amazon, Arbys, Washington Township School, Joyhouse Coffee, Teays valley School, and Teays Valley Freshman building.

Facility Location:
1190 N Court St, Circleville

3717-1-05.1(O)(1) / Using a handwashing sink – accessible at all times
Critical Corrected During Inspection Observed the handsink in the backroom next to the three compartment sink was blocked by a trashcan and other misc items. Ensure that there is a clear and easily accesible path to the handsink so hands are maintained clean.

3717-1-03.4(F)(1)(b) / Time/temperature controlled for safety food – cold holding.
Critical Corrected During Inspection Observed some slices of cheese and strombolis in a reach in cooler not holding 41 degrees F. Took temperature, and the cheese was holding at 45 F and the strombolis were at 48 F ambient. This was brought to the attention of the PIC and the food was immediately moved into another cooler where the 41 F was able to be maintained.

El Pedregal Mexican Restaurant

Facility Location:
129 W Main St, Circleville

On 9/30/2019 received complaint stating that the dumpster behind the restaurant is overflowing.

At the time of inspection the inspector saw that the facility had two dumpsters. One of the dumpsters had bags of trash above the top of the dumpster and the lids. Per the PIC these dumpsters are each emptied twice per week. There was some, but not a large amount of trash around the ground outside the dumpster.

Discussed with the PIC keeping the dumpsters maintained so that the lids can easily shut and ensuring they are emptied at the proper frequency.

Watt Street Tavern

Facility Location:
115 Watt St, Circleville

3717-1-02.4(C)(8) / PIC: duties – ensure employees are rapidly cooling TCS foods.
Critical Observed red beans at 96 F in the walk in cooler at approx 2pm. Per the staff, these items were cooked at 10am. The PIC must ensure that the staff are quickly cooling foods from 135 to 70 in two hours, and to 41 or below within 6 hours. At the time of inspection, these items were reheated and the cooling process was restarted.

3717-1-03.2(C) / Packaged and unpackaged food – preventing contamination by separation, packaging, and segregation
Critical Observed chicken being store above fish in a cooler and also raw ground beef being stored over cheese. Employees shall follow proper food storage with chicken/poultry at the bottom, other types of raw meat above that and cooked and ready to eat foods at the top. .

3717-1-04.5(A)(1) / Cleanliness of equipment food-contact surfaces and utensils.
Critical Observed that the soda guns in the bar areas had mold on them. Ensure that the caps of these soda guns are being thoroughly cleaned routinely. .

3717-1-03.4(F)(1)(b) / Time/temperature controlled for safety food – cold holding.
Critical Observed that the entire salad cooler unit was not maintaining a proper temperature of 41 degree F. Food being stored in the unit include blue cheese dressing, milk, etc. At the time of the inspection, all adulterated foods were discarded. Maintain a proper 41 degree F for cold holding food items.

3717-1-06.2(B) / Handwashing cleanser – availability.
Observed no handwashing soap at the bar handsink. Ensure that soap is readily available at all handwashing sinks. .

3717-1-02.3(C) / Hair restraints – effectiveness.
Observed employee who did not have proper hair restraint. Employees who work with open food shall have proper hair restraints.

3717-1-04.4(A)(3) / Equipment – cutting or piercing parts of can opener not maintained.
Can opener blade dull or creating metal fragments. Ensure that the can opener is free of meatl shavings.

3717-1-04.5(A)(3) / Cleanliness of nonfood-contact surfaces of equipment.
Repeat Non-food contact surfaces of equipment are unclean. Areas include: the handles to the cooler doors, the ansel system, the area under the prep area in front of the pizza oven, etc. Make sure these areas are maintained clean.

3717-1-05.1(S) / Plumbing system – maintained in good repair.
Observed the plumbing fixture underneath the dish machine was being supported by a pan. Plumbing systems shall be maintained in good repair.

3717-1-06.4(A) / Repairing.
Repeat Observed multiple areas throughout the kitchen where floor tiles were cracked and cove molding had been stripped away from the walls. Ensure that these tiles and cove moldings are maintained in good repair and are easily cleanable.

3717-1-06.4(B) / Cleaning – frequency and restrictions.
Facility not maintained clean. Observed areas in the facilities that are not being maintained cleaned. Including but not limited to: dust accumulation in the fans, grime buildup underneath the dish machine, etc.

3717-1-06.2(I)(3) / Lighting – intensity (50 FC)
Observed a light was out over the grill. Replace the bulb to ensure proper light intensity.

Grand Buffett

Facility Location:
1450 Circleville Plaza Dr, Circleville

Minor infractions only 

3717-1-03.2(M) / Wiping cloths – use limitation.
Observed wiping cloths not held in sanitizer between uses. The wiping cloths were put in the sanitizer during the inspection.

3717-1-04.5(A)(3) / Cleanliness of nonfood-contact surfaces of equipment.
Observed that the facility had fans throughout the kitchen that had not been cleaned. The employees removed and cleaned these items at the time of inspection.

3717-1-05.4(P) / Maintaining refuse areas and enclosures.
Observed a build up of trash and debris around the dumpster. Although this is a shared space, maintain the dumpster area clean to prevent attracting pests.

Wendy’s

3717-1-06.2(E) / Handwashing signage.
Handwashing sign(s) not posted at the hand sink near the second drive thru window.

3717-1-04.8(A) / Equipment and utensils – air-drying required.
Repeat Observed some clean pans that were just washed, rinsed and sanitized being stacked while not completely dry. All clean pans/etc must be air dried completely before being stacked and put away.

3717-1-05.4(N) / Covering receptacles.
Waste receptacles not covered properly. Outside dumpsters should be maintianed closed to prevent animals from getting into them.

3717-1-06.4(F) / Drying mops.
Observed a mop that was not in use not hung to air dry. Mops not in use must be hung to air dry.

3717-1-06.4(B) / Cleaning – frequency and restrictions.
Repeat Observed a large amount of grease build up on the floor and walls near the grease friers. Facility should be cleaned at a frequency to be maintained clean.

Circleville Just Save Foods

3717-1-05.1(O)(1) / Using a handwashing sink – accessible at all times
Critical Corrected During Inspection Observed the hand sink was blocked off by a cart. Hand sinks must be easily accesible with a clear path at all times to ensure proper hand washing is being achieved.

3717-1-05.1(O)(2) / Using a handwashing sink – other uses prohibited.
Critical Corrected During Inspection Handwashing sink is being used for purposes other than handwashing. Observed a jub of vinegar stored in the hand sink. At the time of the inspeciton, the vinegar was removed.

3717-1-04.4(A)(2) / Equipment components kept intact, tight, and adjusted
Equipment components are not intact, tight or properly adjusted.Observed the door seal of the produce cooler is beginning to rip and come off. Ensure that this gasket and others in similar condition are either replaced or repaired.

3717-1-05.1(S) / Plumbing system – maintained in good repair.
Observed a minor leak from the faucet of the three compartment sink in the meat/butcher section. Ensure that all plumbing fixtures are in good working condition and no leaks are occuring.

3717-1-06.4(A) / Repairing.
Repeat Physical facilities not maintained in good repair. Observed cracked and damaged tiles surrounding the mop sink. Ensure that this tiles are replaced and maintained in good working condition.

3717-1-06.4(B) / Cleaning – frequency and restrictions.
Observed some dust accumulation in the fan shield in the produce cooler. Ensure that all aspects of the cooler is being kept clean at a continuous frequency.

3717-1-06.1(A) / Floors, walls, and ceilings.
Repeat Floors, walls, and/or ceilings not smooth and easily cleanable.Replace the numerous damaged ceiling tiles.

3717-1-06.4(F) / Drying mops.
Mops dried improperly. Mops shall be hung to air dry when not in use.

Arby’s 6975

Repeat Observed ice build up on the walk in freezer. Maintain equipment in good repair.

3717-1-06.1(A) / Floors, walls, and ceilings.
Observed dry store floor was heavily bowed, giving way under feet, and damaged in several locations. Repair floor in rear of store to prevent hazard to employees and allow easy cleaning.

Pickaway Township School

Facility Location:

3717-1-04(I) / Nonfood-contact surfaces – materials.
Repeat Observed the wood in which the microwave is positioned on top of to be bare and not properly painted/stained. The wood needs to be painted or stained to ensure that it is nonabsorbent and easily cleanable.

3717-1-04.4(C) / Microwave ovens.
Observed the microwave in the kitchen to be a non-commercial grade/household microwave. Microwaves used to prep foods in the kitchen must be commercial grade .
