LONDON, OH – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has announced nearly $280,000 in new grant funding to provide peace officers across the state with free advanced training in traffic safety and impaired-driving enforcement.

The $279,750 Traffic Safety Grant, awarded by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, will allow the Attorney General’s Office to cover the full cost of seven advanced training courses offered through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA).

“Specialized training equals better policing and safer streets,” Yost said. “This is a winning investment for Ohio.”

The courses funded by the grant include:

  • SFST (Standardized Field Sobriety Testing) Instructor
  • ARIDE (Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement)
  • Traffic Crash Level 1 – Collision Investigation
  • Advanced Traffic Collision Investigation Level 2
  • Vehicle Dynamics
  • RADAR and LIDAR ESMD Operator
  • RADAR and LIDAR ESMD Instructor (NHTSA-approved certification)

The funding ensures that officers and their departments will not face any costs for participation. All eligible officers can register for the courses through OPOTA Online, with training expenses covered through September 2026.

Yost’s office said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement’s ability to keep Ohio roads safe while ensuring equitable access to professional development opportunities for agencies of all sizes.
