CIRCLEVILLE, OHIO — For Westfall High School junior Lillian Patterson, the Circleville Pumpkin Show has always been more than just an event — it’s a cherished tradition woven into her life and her community.

“Growing up in the magical town of Circleville has truly been a blessing,” Patterson said. “The Pumpkin Show is where I get to see lifelong friends, reconnect with family, and even make new friends along the way. It’s a time filled with joy, laughter, and memories that last a lifetime.”

One of her favorite memories goes back to childhood, when she could hardly sleep the night before the Pumpkin Show. “I’d wake my mom up by jumping on her bed, singing a silly little song that went, ‘The Pumpkin Show, The Pumpkin Show, lost my money and broke my toe!’ To this day, it still makes me smile.”

If asked to describe the event to someone new, Patterson says it’s a one-of-a-kind celebration. “It’s pumpkin everything — pumpkin donuts, pumpkin sloppy joes, even a 6-foot-wide pumpkin pie. But really, it’s about the people. The whole town comes alive, and it’s so special.”

Her favorite Pumpkin Show tradition is the Queen’s Contest, where she has always been among the loudest fans. “I just love the energy of it all — everyone coming together to support someone they care about,” she said.

Outside of Pumpkin Show, Patterson is proud of being elected as the reporter for her FFA chapter — a role that honors her family’s roots in agriculture. “My grandpa was a Westfall FFA president, so it means a lot to me,” she explained. “It’s helped me grow as a leader and represent my school and community.”

She credits her grandmother as her biggest inspiration. “She’s the kindest person I know, and she’s taught me to believe in myself, follow my faith, and never let others bring me down.”

When it comes to Pumpkin Show treats, Patterson doesn’t hesitate. “Pumpkin sugar waffles are the best. I love sugar waffles anyway, but the pumpkin ones are next level. You can smell them from down the street.”

Some of her best Pumpkin Show memories come from working with friends at the Westfall Booster Booth. “We had so much fun recommending cranberry brats to everyone,” she said with a laugh. “And when I got too cold, I sprinted down to Scioto Valley for hot chocolate to warm up.”

Now, Patterson looks forward to the chance of representing her school as Miss Pumpkin Show. “It would mean everything,” she said. “It’s something I’ve worked so hard for, and it wouldn’t be something handed to me — it would be something I truly earned.”

Her advice to younger girls with the same dream? “Believe in yourself and go for it, no matter what anyone else says. If there’s something you really want, don’t be afraid to take the chance. The rewards are worth it.

Lillian will compete alongside other candidates for the 2025 Miss Pumpkin Show crown, taking part in the Wednesday Night Parade on October 15 before competing for Queen at Pumpkin Show Park.
