CHILLICOTHE, OH — The Ross County Health District (RCHD) has confirmed the first positive tests for West Nile Virus (WNV) in local mosquito populations this season. Mosquito pools collected from Concord Township, Green Township, and the city of Chillicothe have tested positive for the virus.

Health Commissioner Janelle McManis and Director of Environmental Health Kelly Spindler announced the results, which were received earlier this week. While no human cases have been reported, officials are urging residents to take preventive action.

“It’s not unusual to see West Nile in mosquito samples during the summer,” said Spindler. “The key is for the community to stay alert and take steps to avoid bites and reduce breeding areas.”

How to Protect Yourself and Reduce Mosquitoes:

The Ross County Health District recommends the 3 D’s for mosquito protection:

  1. Dump standing water weekly in items like flowerpots, birdbaths, buckets, and gutters.
  2. Dress in long sleeves and pants, especially during peak mosquito hours — typically around dawn and dusk.
  3. Defend using insect repellents that include EPA-approved ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (PMD), or IR3535.

What to Know About West Nile Virus:

West Nile Virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • 8 in 10 people infected show no symptoms.
  • 1 in 5 may experience flu-like symptoms: fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or skin rash.
  • 1 in 150 may develop severe illness, including neurological issues.
  • Older adults and those with chronic health conditions are at higher risk.
  • There is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile Virus.

Although not all mosquitoes carry WNV, the species that does is found throughout Ross County.
