CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — July 14, 2025
Pickaway County Public Health has confirmed the first detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the local mosquito population this year. The positive test came from a mosquito pool collected within the City of Circleville, according to results provided by the Ohio Department of Health.

No human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in Pickaway County so far, but health officials are urging residents to take preventative steps to reduce their risk of infection.

“West Nile Virus is a potentially serious disease that can spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito,” the health department said in a statement Monday. “Residents should remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their families.”

Precautionary Steps Recommended

Pickaway County Public Health advises the public to follow these safety tips:

  1. Use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
  2. Wear long sleeves and pants if spending time outdoors during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk).
  3. Eliminate standing water near your home, including in gutters, birdbaths, flowerpots, and discarded tires.

Symptoms and What to Watch For

Most people infected with West Nile Virus do not develop symptoms. However, those who do may experience:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash

Symptoms can last from a few days to several weeks or longer. Health officials advise anyone experiencing these symptoms after possible mosquito exposure to seek medical attention promptly.
