ASHVILLE, Ohio — Two Columbus men have been charged in connection with a December shooting in Ashville that left a 19-year-old man hospitalized, according to Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call around 3:29 p.m. on December 8, 2025, reporting a man had been shot at 4800 Duvall Road, Lot 114, in Ashville. Officers from the Ashville Police Department and deputies with the Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and discovered that 19-year-old Layton A. Waugh of Lancaster had been shot in the chest during a fight involving multiple individuals.

Waugh was transported by Harrison Township EMS to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. Investigators later confirmed he has since been released from the hospital and is continuing his recovery in stable condition.
Detectives and deputies processed the scene and interviewed multiple witnesses. Through those interviews, authorities learned that other individuals involved in the incident fled the area in a silver Saturn Ion with a black front hood or fender.
On December 9, detectives located the suspect vehicle in Columbus. Working alongside the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, investigators obtained a search warrant and seized the vehicle. The following day, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the Saturn Ion at the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, while digital evidence was submitted to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Computer Crimes Unit for analysis.
After reviewing forensic and digital evidence, detectives obtained arrest warrants for 20-year-old Tyler A. Stepp and 19-year-old Layle R. Mohler, both of Columbus. Both men are charged with complicity to felonious assault and complicity to aggravated robbery.
Tyler Stepp was taken into custody on December 17, 2025. Layle Mohler remains at large.
Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding Mohler’s whereabouts to contact Detective Robert Dauberman at 740-420-5752 or by email at [email protected]. Investigators warn that Mohler should be considered possibly armed and dangerous.
