ASHVILLE, Ohio — A devastating morning commute turned into a life-saving operation for local first responders after a head-on collision left two drivers trapped and a young child injured on Walnut Creek Pike.

Emergency units were dispatched Thursday morning to the area just north of State Route 752 following reports of a two-vehicle wreck with “heavy damage.”

High-Stakes Extrication

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a harrowing scene: both vehicles had sustained massive front-end impact, and both drivers were pinned inside their mangled wreckage. While crews worked with specialized tools to extricate the trapped victims, they located a third victim—a 5-year-old child who had been a backseat passenger in one of the vehicles—standing with bystanders nearby.

The extrication process was described as “quick” despite the severity of the damage, allowing medics to begin immediate life-saving treatment on the two adults.

Air Medical Response

The severity of the injuries prompted a massive air medical response. Two helicopters were deployed to the scene, landing directly on the roadway to transport the drivers to trauma centers in Columbus.

  • The Drivers: Both were airlifted in what was described as critical but “fair” condition following on-site stabilization.
  • The Child: The 5-year-old passenger was treated by ground medics and transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

Roadway Closure and Investigation

Walnut Creek Pike remained closed north of SR-752 for several hours as investigators from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office worked to determine the cause of the head-on strike.

Ashville authorities extended their gratitude to the mutual aid partners who assisted in the complex rescue and transport operation. The names of the victims have not yet been released, and the crash remains under active investigation.
