PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — James Stumbo, the driver involved in a fatal head-on collision on U.S. Route 62 last September, has been arrested on a warrant and will face trial for aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs (OVI).

The charges stem from a tragic crash that occurred on Monday, September 16, 2024, around 2:00 P.M., just south of Township Road 159 (Ballah Road). Stumbo, 59, of Washington Court House, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2022 Ford Ecosport driven by Clint Simmons, 38, also of Washington Court House.

Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene, while Stumbo was airlifted to Grant Medical Center with injuries. Initial reports indicated that Stumbo was suspected of impairment at the time of the crash. Field sobriety and toxicology tests were administered, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol launched a thorough investigation in coordination with the Pickaway County Prosecutor’s Office.

Emergency personnel from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Sterling Joint Fire and EMS, Tri County Fire and EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation responded to the scene. The Pickaway County Coroner also assisted.

Remembering Clint Simmons

Clint Simmons was born June 1, 1986, and was a graduate of Washington Senior High School. He worked in security at Nationwide Insurance Company and was known for his dedication to both his job and his family. Clint was also a husband, leaving behind loved ones who continue to mourn his tragic and sudden loss.

Now that charges have been formally filed and Stumbo is in custody, he will face trial in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court.
