GENEVA — The United States and China have reached a significant breakthrough in trade negotiations, U.S. officials announced today following two days of high-level talks in Geneva. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer confirmed that substantial progress was made, with a full briefing on the details expected tomorrow morning.

“I’m happy to report that we made substantial progress,” said Secretary Bessent during a press conference. He praised the Swiss government for hosting the talks, which he credited with helping foster a productive atmosphere. “We had the vice premier and two vice ministers from China, Ambassador Jamieson, and myself at the table. I spoke to President Trump last night, as did Ambassador Jamieson, and he is fully informed.”

Ambassador Greer echoed the optimism, calling the negotiations “very constructive.” He emphasized how quickly the two sides were able to come to agreement, suggesting that the differences between the two economic powers were not as insurmountable as once feared.

“This reflects a tremendous amount of groundwork,” said Greer. “We must remember that we’re here because of the United States’ $1.2 trillion trade deficit, which led the President to declare a national emergency and impose tariffs. We believe this agreement with China will be a key step in addressing that crisis.”

Full terms of the trade deal are expected to be released in a scheduled press briefing tomorrow morning.
