FAYETTE COUNTY — A routine traffic stop on U.S. 35 turned into a major drug bust Sunday after deputies and local police seized more than a pound of methamphetamine and several ounces of fentanyl.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, deputies partnered with the Washington Court House Police Department on Feb. 15 as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the area.

Deputy Tylan Martin and Deputy Gage Martin stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on U.S. 35 East in Jefferson Township. Deputies requested assistance from Officer Stapleton and K9 Edox. After being deployed, the K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.

A subsequent search led to the discovery of more than one pound of methamphetamine and approximately three ounces of fentanyl.

Two individuals were arrested:

  • Christopher Hunt, 43, of Dayton — charged with first-degree felony possession of methamphetamine with a Major Drug Offender specification and third-degree felony possession of fentanyl.
  • Emily Stires, 39, of Jeffersonville — charged with first-degree felony possession of methamphetamine with a Major Drug Offender specification and second-degree misdemeanor possession of drug abuse instruments.

Sheriff Vernon Stanforth praised the collaboration between agencies, stating that strong partnerships and proactive policing continue to make a difference in removing dangerous drugs from Fayette County communities.

Both agencies emphasized their commitment to pursuing criminal activity throughout Fayette County and keeping residents safe.
