TSA Eases Security Rules at Regional Airports: Shoe Removal No Longer Required for Most Travelers

CHILLICOTHE, OH — Air travelers flying out of regional airports across the country will now experience a faster and more convenient security process, as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has officially eliminated the requirement to remove shoes at security checkpoints in standard screening lanes.

The new policy went into effect Monday, July 7, at 10:00 a.m., and applies to all TSA federalized airports, including those serving Southern Ohio and surrounding regions.

The rule change is part of TSA’s ongoing effort to modernize and streamline airport security procedures, while still maintaining strong national security standards. Travelers using standard or blended security lanes will now be able to keep their footwear on—though TSA officers may still request shoe removal in specific circumstances if additional screening is necessary.

This update is based on ongoing risk assessments and intelligence, along with improvements in layered security approach. TSA can now detect threats through advanced screening technologies and vetting systems.

A More Efficient, Passenger-Friendly Experience

The decision to ease the long-standing shoe removal requirement stems from TSA’s enhanced security tools and methods, including:

  • Secure Flight passenger vetting
  • Advanced imaging technology
  • Improved identity verification systems

While the shoe rule has been one of the most familiar features of post-9/11 air travel, TSA says the risk profile has shifted over time, and its modern screening systems are now better equipped to detect threats without relying on every passenger removing their shoes.

What Travelers Should Know

Local airport officials are encouraging passengers to continue following TSA signage and officer directions during the screening process. Travelers should still arrive early, especially during peak travel hours, as security checkpoint wait times can vary.
