With Thanksgiving just around the corner, two major grocery chains are going head-to-head to help families stretch their holiday budgets. Both Walmart and ALDI have announced Thanksgiving meal deals priced at around $40, each promising to feed up to 10 people without breaking the bank.
Walmart Brings Back Its Best Thanksgiving Offer Yet
Walmart has revived its annual Thanksgiving Meal Basket, which the company says is its best offer yet. The basket includes a Butterball turkey for 97 cents per pound — Walmart’s lowest turkey price since 2019 — along with a full lineup of traditional holiday staples.
For under $40, shoppers can expect:
- 13.5 lb. Butterball Turkey
- Stove Top Stuffing (Twin Pack)
- Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup
- Great Value Dinner Rolls
- Fresh russet potatoes, cranberries, and baby carrots
- Canned corn and green beans
- Macaroni & cheese, brown gravy mix, pie crusts, and more
“We know every dollar and minute counts,” said John Furner, Walmart’s president and CEO. “That’s why we’re offering a low-priced, one-click Thanksgiving meal basket featuring iconic brands like Butterball and Stove Top alongside trusted Walmart private brand items.”
The baskets can be ordered online or purchased in stores through Dec. 25, with delivery available in as fast as one hour. Walmart is also offering alternative holiday baskets this year, including gluten-free, balanced, and prime rib options.
ALDI Challenges with a $40 Feast for Ten
Not to be outdone, ALDI is once again touting what it calls the most affordable Thanksgiving meal in America. The budget-friendly grocer says its $40 feast costs less than $4 per person, featuring 21 ingredients for a full Thanksgiving spread.
The ALDI menu includes:
- A 14-pound turkey
- Rolls, cranberry sauce, mac and cheese, and stuffing
- Sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes with gravy, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie
“The ALDI commitment to low prices is unwavering,” said Atty McGrath, CEO of ALDI U.S. “Saving our shoppers money is our mission every day — but it’s especially important during the holidays.”
Shoppers can build their own feast in stores or online from Oct. 15 through Dec. 24, with curbside pickup and delivery available through partners like Instacart, Uber Eats, and DoorDash.
According to ALDI, the promotion comes as food prices remain higher than last year. The company estimates that a family of four can save up to $4,000 annually by shopping exclusively at ALDI.
“Thanksgiving is the biggest food holiday of the year,” said Scott Patton, Chief Communications Officer for ALDI U.S. “Families shouldn’t have to make trade-offs to feed everyone, especially at Thanksgiving.”
Affordable Feasts in a Tough Economy
With grocery prices continuing to climb nationwide, both retailers are banking on their Thanksgiving promotions to attract budget-conscious shoppers. Whether families choose Walmart’s ready-to-order basket or ALDI’s build-your-own feast, both stores promise a full holiday meal — turkey and trimmings included — for about $40 total.
