PICKAWAY COUNTY, OH — The mayor of South Bloomfield is taking a bold step to unite local leaders across Pickaway County in what he describes as a proactive stand against unchecked development. Mayor Aaron Thomas has announced the formation of the Protect Pickaway Alliance (PPA) — a non-governmental coalition focused on promoting collaboration, transparency, and shared problem-solving among townships, villages, cities, schools, and public safety officials.
In a statement prepared for public meetings and local government presentations, Thomas emphasized that the alliance is not an official governing body. Instead, it aims to serve as a monthly roundtable of open, public discussions where officials can talk through challenges, share solutions, and offer mutual support on issues like zoning, infrastructure, education, and public safety.
“This isn’t about control or politics,” said Thomas. “It’s about ensuring no local government in Pickaway County is left to face outside pressures — like aggressive development or unpopular solar projects — alone.”
One example Thomas cited was the hypothetical case of a solar project being proposed in Walnut Township with overwhelming community opposition. Under the PPA, neighboring communities could show solidarity by passing resolutions of support. Likewise, if one township finds success with a zoning regulation, others could learn from it.
The alliance is still in the early planning stages, and Thomas says he’s currently gathering interest from other leaders across the county — particularly those running in the upcoming elections.
“There’s been some interest, but we need more to make this real,” he said. “I’m inviting any elected official, department head, school leader, or engaged resident who cares about the future of Pickaway County to reach out.”
Thomas says the PPA’s mission is to “protect Pickaway County by building relationships and keeping the lines of communication open before outside interests come in and try to divide us.” He expects momentum may build after the November elections but is laying the foundation now.
