COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 2, 2025) – The start of September officially signals the beginning of Ohio’s fall hunting season, a tradition that state leaders say is deeply rooted in family, community, and conservation.
State Rep. Justin Pizzulli (R-Scioto County) highlighted the opening of the season, noting the important role hunting plays in southern Ohio.
“Hunting season is a proud southern Ohio tradition that brings families together, strengthens our connection to the outdoors, and supports conservation in our state,” Pizzulli said.
The 2025 Ohio hunting season officially began on Sept. 1 with squirrel (fox, red, and gray), dove, rail (Virginia and sora), snipe, and gallinule.
Other key opening dates include:
- Saturday, Sept. 6 – Early Canada goose and early teal (through Sept. 14).
- Saturday, Sept. 27 – Deer archery season.
This year also marks a change for older hunters. House Bill 64, passed earlier this year by the Ohio House Majority Caucus, lowers the age for senior discounts on hunting, fishing, and sportsmen’s licenses from 70 to 65. The law takes effect Sept. 30, just in time for deer season.
Hunters can purchase licenses and view the complete season schedule through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) website.
