COLUMBUS, Ohio (August 5, 2025) — In the wake of severe flooding that struck Fairfield County over the weekend of July 26–27, State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) is calling on Governor Mike DeWine to declare the area a disaster zone to unlock critical recovery resources for residents, businesses, and local governments.

In a formal letter sent to the governor, Schaffer emphasized the urgent need for state disaster assistance to help communities rebuild after what local officials have described as extensive damage to infrastructure and private property.

“As the State Senator for Fairfield County, I feel that it is my duty to do everything possible to provide assistance to those individuals, families, and businesses in need,” Schaffer wrote. “State disaster assistance could go a long way in bridging the gap for those Ohioans as they work to recover and rebuild their property and lives.”

His request follows emergency declarations issued on July 29 by both the Fairfield County Commissioners and Greenfield Township Trustees in response to widespread damage caused by flash flooding, including washed-out roadways, collapsed culverts, and flooded homes and businesses.

Schaffer stressed that a disaster declaration would activate the State Disaster Relief Program, making funding available for those impacted.

“Declaring a disaster and activating the State Disaster Relief Program for Fairfield County would unlock critical funding for local governments, individuals, and businesses that have been ravaged by flood waters and are struggling to recover,” he said.

Fairfield County residents are encouraged to report property damage to the Fairfield County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) by calling 740-654-4357 or visiting fairfieldema.com.

Schaffer’s office is also available to help those affected stay informed about state assistance as updates become available. Residents can reach the senator at 614-466-8076 or by email at [email protected].
