SCIOTO TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A three-vehicle chain-reaction crash on US Route 50 left a local motorcyclist with serious injuries Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:57 PM on April 7, 2026, near milepost 21 in Scioto Township. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a teen driver triggered the collision while traffic was slowing in the southeast lanes.

The Collision

The Highway Patrol report states that a 2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide, operated by Richard L. Schoonover Jr., 55, of Chillicothe, and a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Daniel Scott Magill, 47, also of Chillicothe, were slowing down for traffic.

A 2011 Dodge Nitro, driven by a 17-year-old female from Chillicothe, failed to stop in time and struck the rear of Schoonover’s motorcycle. The impact was powerful enough to push the motorcycle into the back of Magill’s Equinox.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Schoonover, who the report indicates was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained suspected serious injuries. He was trapped briefly and had to be freed by mechanical means before being transported by Scioto Township EMS to Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe.

The 17-year-old driver and Mr. Magill were both wearing seatbelts and reported no apparent injuries at the scene.

Investigation and Road Closure

The crash resulted in a significant disruption for afternoon commuters, as US-50 was closed for approximately one hour while crews cleared the wreckage and troopers conducted their investigation.

The juvenile driver was issued a citation for Assured Clear Distance Ahead (ORC 4511.21A). Both the Dodge Nitro and the Harley-Davidson sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene by Penwell’s and Scioto Valley Towing, respectively.

The investigation was handled by Trooper Haley Shreck of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
