ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — A traffic stop attempt in Ross County turned into a pursuit Saturday evening, ending with the arrest of a man driving a side-by-side off-road vehicle.

According to the Ross County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Brandon Stanley attempted to stop a yellow and gray Yamaha YXZ1000 in the 1900 block of Massieville Road on August 16. The driver, later identified as David Upton-Barrows, allegedly failed to stop at an intersection and was seen traveling at a high rate of speed without a visible license plate.

When Deputy Stanley activated his cruiser’s lights and sirens, Upton-Barrows reportedly fled, reaching speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour as he turned onto Moss Hollow Road and eventually continued south on Three Locks Road.

The pursuit came to an end near the intersection of Three Locks Road and Stoney Creek Road, where Deputy Stanley maneuvered his cruiser to block the side-by-side. Upton-Barrows and a passenger, Simon Dempsey, were ordered out of the vehicle at Taser-point. Both were handcuffed, but Dempsey was released without charges.

The side-by-side was towed to the Ross County Impound Lot, and Upton-Barrows was booked into the Ross County Jail. He is facing a charge of failure to comply.

Deputies confirmed the incident was recorded on body camera.
