WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump has officially declared May 2025 as National Foster Care Month, honoring the vital role that foster families and caregivers play in the lives of more than 360,000 children and youth across the United States each year.
In a proclamation issued from the White House on May 7, President Trump called on Americans to recognize the contributions of foster parents, kinship caregivers, and the network of professionals who work tirelessly to provide safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children who cannot remain with their biological families.
“Families are the foundation of our country, but too often, children find themselves in need of safe and loving care for reasons beyond their control,” said President Trump. “Foster parents rise to the occasion with selfless compassion, giving every child the opportunity to feel supported and valued.”

The proclamation acknowledges the collective efforts of foster families, social workers, educators, judges, clergy, and law enforcement officers who support children navigating the foster care system. It also emphasizes the importance of kinship care, where extended family members provide a familiar and stable home environment.
President Trump highlighted legislative efforts aimed at strengthening families, including the Family First Prevention Services Act, signed during his first term. The law focuses on evidence-based interventions to prevent family separation and keep children in their homes when safe and possible. It also provides funding for mental health services, addiction treatment, parenting support, housing assistance, and job training—tools designed to address root causes of family instability.
The proclamation also recognizes First Lady Melania Trump’s BE BEST initiative, which continues to support youth in foster care by promoting education, resilience, and well-being. Her efforts aim to help children transition into adulthood with hope and opportunity.
“We need more Americans to answer the call to serve as foster families, helping each child realize their worth and potential,” the president stated. “These caregivers are the unsung heroes of our communities.”
A Call to Action
As part of National Foster Care Month, President Trump is urging all Americans to find ways to support foster youth, whether by becoming foster parents, volunteering, or advocating for children in need.
“Every child deserves the blessings of a firm foundation and endless opportunity,” he concluded. “Let us come together to protect and uplift our nation’s most precious treasure—our children.”
