CHILLICOTHE — A Chillicothe man is facing a felonious assault charge after police say a domestic dispute between brothers ended in gunfire Saturday afternoon, leading investigators to confiscate dozens of firearms, drugs, and nearly $13,000 in cash from a Winona Boulevard home.

According to Chillicothe Police Detective Adam Steele, officers were called to 146 Winona Blvd. on October 18, 2025, after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they detained Albert Scoles, who allegedly shot his brother, Andrew Scoles, during an altercation in their garage.

Andrew was found hiding in the home’s attic with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where detectives photographed the injury. Andrew told police he had been working on a vehicle when his brother, who “suffers from schizophrenia,” confronted him with a pistol and accused him of “talking about him” before firing.

Albert told investigators a different story — claiming the brothers had been “doing martial arts” in the garage when the gun went off accidentally. He admitted retrieving the loaded firearm from inside the house before the incident and told police he was not legally allowed to possess weapons due to his mental disability.

A search warrant approved by Judge Keith Washburn uncovered an extensive cache of firearms throughout the home, including more than 30 guns, several with defaced serial numbers or listed as stolen, along with ammunition, drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine, and $12,900 in cash.

Police also located two digital scales and a crack pipe. The suspected meth was sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) for chemical testing.

Records show that Andrew Scoles has prior convictions for aggravated drug possession and having weapons under disability, which prohibit him from owning or possessing firearms.

During the investigation, officers also detained Paul Vanhorn, who was walking away from the scene and found to have an active warrant from Highland County. Vanhorn was taken to jail after being cleared medically for a minor arm wound.

Witness Amanda Singleton told officers she was visiting at the time of the shooting and left the garage when she saw Albert approach with a gun.

Police say the case remains under investigation. Albert Scoles was booked into the Ross County Jail on a felonious assault charge and appeared in Chillicothe Municipal Court on October 20, 2025.
