GROVE CITY, Ohio — February 28, 2026 — A Grove City police officer is being recognized for her bravery and quick thinking after helping residents escape a dangerous structure fire while off duty last fall.

Sydney Reeser, an officer with the Grove City Division of Police, received a formal Letter of Commendation from Matthew O. Hafey during a ceremony held February 20 at the Grove City Police Department. Grove City Police Chief Eric Scott joined Sheriff Hafey in presenting the award.

The commendation stems from actions Reeser took in the early morning hours of September 7, 2025. After completing a 13-hour shift, Reeser was driving home to Circleville around 3:30 a.m. when she noticed a large structure fire in the 20000 block of Island Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, Reeser immediately called 911 and remained on scene to assist responding deputies. With a fully involved barn fire nearby and explosions reportedly being heard, she helped contact residents and assisted with evacuating them from their home before fire crews arrived.

Multiple fire departments responded to battle the blaze, which was ultimately extinguished around 8:30 a.m.

In his commendation, Sheriff Hafey praised Reeser for going above and beyond the call of duty.

“Officer Reeser exemplifies the qualities of what a law enforcement officer should be,” Hafey said. “Going above and beyond, especially while being off duty, demonstrates her commitment to our profession. The citizens of Grove City are fortunate to have such a caring and dedicated officer protecting them.”

Hafey noted that Reeser could have simply reported the fire and continued home but instead chose to stay and ensure residents were safe.

Reeser expressed appreciation for the recognition, stating she was simply doing what any off-duty officer would do. Officials said her actions serve as a reminder that first responders are never truly off duty when it comes to protecting their communities.
