PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — With dangerously cold temperatures expected to move into the area, Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey announced that the sheriff’s office will make the jail lobby available as a warming area for those in need.

The temporary measure is intended to provide a safe, warm, and dry place for individuals who may not have adequate shelter during the freezing conditions. While the space is limited, Sheriff Hafey said it is an important way the department can help protect residents from the life-threatening effects of extreme cold.

“It’s not much, but it’s a warm, dry place we can offer to help local people who need it during these temperatures,” Sheriff Hafey told Scioto Post.

The sheriff’s office encourages residents to check on neighbors, friends, and family members during the cold spell and to reach out for assistance if someone is in danger due to exposure.

Residents needing a warm place to escape the cold may go to the Pickaway County Jail lobby during the period of extreme temperatures.
