COLUMBUS, Ohio — A local Pickaway County resident is being recognized on the national stage for excellence in digital forensic investigations.

The National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) recently honored members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Computer Crimes Unit during an award presentation held at the United States Secret Service office in Columbus yesterday. Three Patrol employees received recognition through two separate national awards.

Among those honored was Forensic Computer Specialist 2 (FCS2) Daniel Maher, a Pickaway County resident, who was named among the top 100 state and local law enforcement graduates trained in digital forensic examination techniques. The NCFI annually selects the top 100 graduates nationwide who demonstrate exceptional skill and dedication in cyber investigations.

Joining Maher in the top 100 was Forensic Computer Specialist 2 John “Keith” Ferguson. Both were recognized for their commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting communities through advanced forensic expertise.

In addition to the top 100 distinction, Maher received two National Significant Case Awards for his forensic work on separate cases originating in Jackson County and Pickaway County. These awards recognize outstanding investigative contributions that have a substantial impact on criminal cases.

Also receiving national recognition was Forensic Computer Specialist 2 Stewart M.R. Watkins, who earned a Significant Case Award for his assistance on a case in Belmont County.

Officials say the awards highlight the growing importance of digital forensics in modern law enforcement and the critical role these specialists play in solving complex crimes.
