COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA), Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA), and National Weather Service Wilmington (NWS) are urging residents to brace for extreme heat expected late this weekend into next week, with a warning issued at 11:40 AM EDT on Friday, June 20, 2025. The advisory highlights the need for extra caution among vulnerable groups, including older adults, those with chronic illnesses, and caregivers of infants and children, as extreme heat claims more lives annually than any other weather hazard.

The forecast poses risks of heat-related illnesses like cardiovascular and respiratory complications and heat stroke, particularly for the elderly, outdoor workers, infants, the unhoused, and those with medical conditions. Ohio EMA recommends having a plan to escape the heat, such as knowing cooling centers, and balancing outdoor summer activities with hydration and breaks in lightweight clothing.

Community support is encouraged, with neighbors urged to check on at-risk individuals. Prevention is key, with officials advising increased water intake—without waiting for thirst—avoiding salt tablets without medical advice, and steering clear of alcohol or caffeine, which worsen dehydration. Symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as heavy sweating, dizziness, or fainting, require moving to a cool area, loosening clothing, and sipping water, with 911 called if vomiting or unconsciousness occurs. Heat stroke, marked by a body temperature of 103°F or higher and confusion, demands immediate emergency response.

A critical warning targets leaving children or pets in vehicles, where temperatures can soar 20 degrees in 10 minutes, risking severe illness or death. Travelers are advised to place personal items in the back seat as a reminder to check for sleeping children or pets before exiting.
