Chillicothe — Political free speech filled the sidewalk in front of the Ross County Courthouse on Saturday afternoon, joining a nationwide rally of “No Kings” day in opposition to the Trump administration.

A smaller number of Trump supporters and apparent conservatives peppered the crowd, surprisingly mixed in with the apparent liberal majority – in peace – between noon and 3pm. Several vehicles with Trump banners and U.S. flags were driven past the crowd.

I spoke with Taryn, one organizer I could find at the event, who listed programs and social groups that she said were under assault by President Trump. (Hear Taryn in her own words below.)

She is an organizer in “Edge of Appalachia Ohio Indivisible.” I about what similar event will be next, and Taryn said they were joining “Women of Waverly” who have been protesting at 4:30pm every Friday for months at Canal Park.

From the website of Edge of Appalachia Ohio Indivisible:

“We are a new Indivisible progressive grassroots movement group located in red rural Ohio while also partnering with Women’s and People’s March along with Ohio local coalitions such as Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio. Here we are building a community with like minded folks for the areas in Highland, Adams, Ross, Pike, Clinton and the surrounding counties who want to stand up and fight for our democracy.”

The rally had an entry on the “Mobilize” website:

Kick out the Clowns- Chillicothe, Ohio

“Edge of Appalachia Ohio Indivisible is partnering with Women’s March for this Nationwide creative action protest!

“We are also hosting a No Kings as well. We understand a lot of folks would like the No Kings theme and some like the performative action to have a little extra fun. The theme doesn’t matter, showing up is what matters. Just show up.”
