COLUMBUS, Ohio – Central Ohio filmmaker Shane Thompson is bringing attention to the critical issue of school violence with his upcoming short film, The First Day of School. Shot in Columbus, the film features a primarily local cast of child actors alongside Hollywood veteran Doug Jones, known for roles in Hocus Pocus, Star Trek: Discovery, and several Guillermo del Toro films.
Thompson, a former educator, penned the script and serves as both producer and co-director on the project alongside fellow co-director and producer Ralph Scott. Thompson explained that the film was inspired by firsthand experiences witnessing the fear children feel when faced with threats of violence in schools.
“I wanted to tell a story that really brings awareness to the problem of violence in our schools,” Thompson said. “No child should have to fear for their safety while getting their education.” The production highlights local talent both in front of and behind the camera.

The young cast includes Marian Key, Chandler Richey, Abel Norton, Thomas Lucas, Kaelynn “Stitch” Boyd, and Isla Streeter, many of whom are participating in a professional film production for the first time. Thompson emphasized the importance of providing these aspiring actors with hands-on experience in the arts while using storytelling to advocate for positive change.
Joining the young cast is Doug Jones, whose four-decade career spans iconic roles under heavy prosthetic makeup and collaborations with Guillermo del Toro on films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and The Shape of Water. Thompson described working with Jones as a “pinch myself moment” and praised the actor’s professionalism, kindness, and mentorship for the local cast, along with local Richie Verito, owner of Richie’s New York Corner Deli, who serves as an actor and producer on the project.
The filmmakers hope The First Day of School will extend beyond film festivals, serving as an educational tool in schools to spark dialogue around school safety and violence prevention.
“Every parent I know has feared for their child’s safety at school at some point,” Thompson said. “Through this film, we hope to encourage conversations that lead to real change.”
