SOUTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio (Oct. 16, 2025) — A new flavor is coming to South Bloomfield as La Matraca Mexican Restaurant prepares to open its doors at 5075 South Union Street, Suite D, adding to the village’s growing list of new businesses.
Construction began about a month ago on the once-empty lot, and an empty store according to permit documents, the popular restaurant chain — with existing locations in Canal Winchester and Delaware — has secured building and alcohol permits for the site.
The addition of La Matraca marks another step in South Bloomfield’s rapid development. This year alone, the village has welcomed a Taco Bell, a parts store, and a car wash, following last year’s major addition of a Sheetz gas station.
Local leaders and developers say South Bloomfield’s proximity to U.S. Route 23, a major corridor for travelers and commuters, continues to make it a prime location for growth. Thousands of vehicles pass through the area daily, drawing new business interest from across central and southern Ohio.
The village’s economic momentum could soon get another boost. Congressman Dave Taylor (OH-02) recently introduced House Resolution 608, supporting a study for the development of an Interstate 73 (I-73) corridor through southern Ohio. The proposed interstate would largely follow the U.S. 23 route, stretching from Toledo through Columbus and south to the Kentucky/West Virginia border — a move that could strengthen connectivity, safety, and local economies.
“With major industries expanding — from defense manufacturing near Columbus to uranium enrichment in Piketon — southern Ohio is on the rise,” said Taylor. “An I-73 corridor would give local workers, manufacturers, and small businesses the infrastructure they need to thrive.”
For now, residents can look forward to something a little closer to home — sizzling fajitas, tacos, and margaritas — as La Matraca readies to bring a fresh dining experience to the heart of South Bloomfield.
