CIRCLEVILLE, OH — Campers at A.W. Marion State Park have a new reason to get active this spring. A brand-new Gaga Ball pit has officially opened at the campground playground, offering a high-energy, inclusive game for visitors of all ages just in time for the 2026 camping season.

The project is the result of months of planning and hard work by Josef Siders, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 170 (chartered at Trinity Lutheran Church). Siders designed the project to boost recreational opportunities at the park, focusing on a game known for teamwork and fast-paced social interaction.

Built with Grit and Community Support

The project was a true community effort, overcoming winter weather to meet a mid-March deadline. Excavation began in January while snow was still on the ground, and as soon as temperatures rose in February, Siders led a workforce of Scouts and school friends to complete the build in a single day.

The new 20-foot diameter pit features:

  • Durable Construction: Treated lumber walls with powder-coated steel corner supports.
  • Safety First: A durable, crushed limestone base and a lowered entry wall for easy access for all abilities.
  • Clear Instructions: An on-site sign explaining the rules for those new to the game.

A Community-Funded Success

The project, valued at nearly $1,000, was completed ahead of schedule and under budget thanks to an outpouring of local support.

Key contributors included:

  • Monetary Donations: Members of Trinity Lutheran Church and North Court Animal Clinic.
  • Materials & Labor: Melvin Stone (aggregate), Chris Ward (delivery), Dynahoe Tool & Equipment Rental, and the Ohio State Parks & Watercraft staff at Deer Creek for excavation.

Because of this generosity, Siders was able to donate over $300 in surplus funds to The Friends of Deer Creek to support future improvements at A.W. Marion State Park.

How to Play

For the uninitiated, Gaga Ball is often described as a “kinder version of dodgeball.” Players use their hands to strike a bouncy ball, aiming to hit opponents below the knees. It’s played in a “pit” (the octagon), and the last person standing wins. It’s a low-barrier sport that allows children of varying athletic abilities to compete together.

Plan Your Visit

The Gaga Ball pit is located near the playground on the east side of Hargus Lake, accessible from Warner-Huffer Road via Ringgold Southern Road. It is free for all campers and day-use visitors during regular park hours. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bouncy ball to join in the fun.

“This project will provide a long-lasting recreational benefit to park visitors for many years to come,” said Siders. “We’re proud that youth leadership and community collaboration brought this vision to life.”
