Letter to the Editor – Veterans Deserve Better Than Governor DeWine’s Hemp Ban

As a veteran, I’m deeply disappointed by Governor DeWine’s decision to ban hemp-derived products in Ohio. Many of us who served rely on legal, hemp products to manage pain, anxiety, and sleep issues without turning to addictive prescription drugs. This ban takes away one of the few natural options that has helped countless veterans regain some quality of life.

During my service, I learned the importance of responsibility and personal freedom. Ohio adults should have the right to choose hemp-based wellness products that are already regulated and federally legal. Instead of an outright ban, the state should focus on sensible standards to ensure safety and labeling — not punish veterans and small businesses who have followed the rules.

Hemp products have been a lifeline for veterans like me who are trying to live healthier, more stable lives. Governor DeWine’s ban ignores that reality and will only push people back toward pharmaceuticals or the black market. We deserve better.

Hopefully those in the state legislature will take a more pragmatic approach to reform than Governor DeWine’s draconian ban.  Age gating, labeling, licensure, and proper testing are all sensible solutions to this issue.  A full ban or mandating that hemp products only to be sold in marijuana dispensaries is not.

I urge members of the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives to pass meaningful reform on hemp and ensure that veterans like myself have access to these products.
