ASHVILLE, OH (May 4, 2025) — A popular Ashville eatery, Kelli Jo’s Restaurant, is in the spotlight after a recent inspection by the Pickaway County General Health District revealed 13 health code violations, including multiple critical infractions. The latest findings follow a September 2024 inspection where the establishment was cited for 14 violations.

The most recent inspection, conducted in April 2025, was prompted by a public complaint. Health officials have scheduled a follow-up inspection for May to ensure compliance and verify that necessary corrective actions have been taken.

🔴 Critical Violations Identified in April:

  • Handwashing Compliance: An employee failed to wash their hands before putting on gloves — a repeat violation.
  • Blocked Handwashing Sink: A broom and dustpan were found in the kitchen handsink, obstructing its use.
  • Cross-Contamination Risk: Raw chicken was stored on the same tray as cooked ham.
  • Dirty Equipment: Knives were found dirty; the can opener and ice machine showed buildup and grime.
  • Improper Cold Holding: Salad dressings and sour cream were measured at 59°F, well above the required 41°F; the items were voluntarily discarded.
  • Unlabeled Chemicals: A container of glass cleaner in the kitchen was not labeled.
  • Backflow Prevention: The ice machine drain line lacked an air gap, risking contamination.

⚠️ Non-Critical Violations Included:

  • Missing Hand Soap: Kitchen sink lacked proper hand soap.
  • Handwashing Signage: No sign posted in the men’s restroom — a repeat offense.
  • Uncovered Food Storage: Several frozen and refrigerated items were left uncovered.
  • Utensil Storage Issues: Utensils were not stored in an inverted, sanitary position.
  • Unclean Equipment Areas: The walk-in cooler door track had visible debris, indicating inadequate cleaning frequency.

Despite the severity of the findings, some violations were corrected during the inspection, including removal of items blocking the handsink and disposal of improperly stored food. However, the repetition of critical issues raises concerns about ongoing food safety practices at the restaurant. During the 2024 inspection, washing of hands, cleaning utensils, cleanliness, and handling food with bare hands were a majority of the violations also.

Health officials emphasize the importance of food service operators maintaining strict sanitation and safety standards. The upcoming follow-up inspection will determine whether Kelli Jo’s has made the necessary improvements to remain in good standing.
