Chillicothe — The “Juneteenth” show at the Pump House Center for the Arts had its opening night on Thursday, with four of the artists in attendance.
The pastel artwork of Carlos Walker lined the walls of the first floor, with the theme of “What If: Walk a Mile in Our Shoes.” Walker has copies of his book, also with a ‘turnabout’ theme, on sale there.
The Mezzanine Gallery featured the work of local artists with a Juneteenth theme: Damianne Fischer, Tony Keaton, Krystian Jones, Steven Riggs, Angie Terry, and Bev Reiley. Show coordinator Angela Young introduced the show and the four artists present, with each giving a statement in the below video.
Walker spoke about his life-changing 13 years in prison after being convicted for dealing drugs. After his interview, he told me that he now deals art. He has a website and Facebook page.
I also caught 21-year-old Chillicothean Krystian Jones and asked her about her four paintings in the mezzanine. I had interviewed Damianne Fischer in last year’s show – hear from her in that story.
The show runs through the end of the month, and other Juneteenth events are happening in Chillicothe. The Pump House Center for the Arts is closed Mondays, but open most other days at least 11 to 4. Learn more on their Facebook page and website.
