COLUMBUS, OH – Pavement repairs on the I-270 Southbound ramp to SR 161 Eastbound have been successfully completed, with all associated ramps now open to traffic as of 12:02 PM EDT on Monday, June 23, 2025, following a significant tanker fire incident. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced the reopening, resolving a closure that lasted approximately 12 hours after a dramatic crash on Sunday.

The incident began when a pickup truck lost control on the exit ramp, colliding with a tanker carrying about 8,500 gallons of fuel, causing it to overturn. The crash ignited a massive fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky, which required foam to extinguish. The tanker driver sustained minor injuries, while the pickup driver fled eastbound on Route 161 and remains unidentified, with police continuing their search. Initially, the I-270 SB ramp to SR 161 EB remained closed overnight as ODOT partnered with Kokosing for repairs. Inspectors confirmed the structural safety of the I-270 Northbound to SR 161 Westbound ramp bridge, though it stayed closed until debris was cleared. Both ramps were targeted to reopen for Monday’s morning commute, a goal now met.

ODOT has assured the public that the ramp and bridge are structurally sound, restoring normal traffic flow after the hazardous event.
