CHILLICOTHE, OH – The Ross County Heritage Center will host a special reception to launch its latest exhibit, “Unheard Voices: A Selective History of African American Men and Women of Chillicothe and Ross County,” on Saturday, June 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 45 W 5th St. The event, announced on Monday, June 16, 2025, is free and open to the public.
This archival exhibit celebrates the contributions and experiences of African American individuals in the local community. Guests can enjoy light refreshments, explore the display, and engage with the museum’s Lead Archivist, who will be available to provide insights and answer questions. A short program at 3:00 p.m. will feature remarks from staff and details on the exhibit’s development.
Among the notable figures highlighted is David Nickens, an exceptional yet lesser-known historical figure. Born into slavery in Virginia, Nickens moved to Chillicothe in 1806 and became Ohio’s first Black ordained minister. He founded the First Baptist Church and played a key role in the Underground Railroad, using his influence to help Black individuals obtain freedom papers.
