Hazardous Materials Incident Prompts Evacuations Near Austin Powder Plant in Vinton County

VINTON COUNTY, OH — Emergency crews are actively responding to a hazardous materials incident involving the release of anhydrous nitric acid from the Austin Powder Plant in Vinton County. The incident, which began on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, has led to multiple evacuations as officials work to ensure public safety.

According to the Vinton County Emergency Management Agency, the released chemical plume is currently contained within the county, with no evidence of spread into neighboring areas. Air quality assessments are being conducted around the clock, with both state and federal partners assisting in the response effort.

⚠️ Areas Under Evacuation:

The Vinton County Sheriff’s Office has ordered immediate evacuations in the following areas:

  • Creek Road
  • Morgan Road
  • Infirmary Road
  • State Route 677
  • Village of Zaleski

Residents are advised to evacuate using Route 278 east of Zaleski to U.S. Route 50 in order to avoid potential exposure and emergency roadblocks.

A temporary shelter has been established at Vinton County High School for those displaced or in need of safe lodging.
