STATESVILLE, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina are investigating a deadly plane crash involving a business jet owned by semi-retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle that occurred Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport.
According to officials, a Cessna C550 crashed on the tarmac around 10:20 a.m. Eastern Time while attempting to land. Authorities have confirmed that the crash resulted in fatalities, though the number of victims and their identities have not yet been officially released.
Sources at the airport who were awaiting the aircraft said Biffle and members of his family were believed to be on board at the time of the crash. Officials have not yet confirmed the identities of those involved, and no official statement has been released regarding Biffle’s condition.
Biffle, a 19-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, is a prominent figure in the sport and made history as the first driver to win championships in NASCAR’s Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series. In recent years, he has been known for humanitarian efforts, including piloting his private helicopter to deliver supplies to North Carolina residents stranded by flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, and the airport experienced temporary disruptions following the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken over the investigation and is expected to hold a media briefing on Friday. The time and location of that briefing have not yet been announced.
This is a developing story, and additional details are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
