WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation have ordered airlines operating at 40 U.S. airports to significantly reduce flight schedules beginning Friday, November 7, as part of efforts to ease strain on the nation’s aviation system during the ongoing government shutdown.

According to the FAA, the reductions are aimed at maintaining safety — the agency’s top priority — while managing limited staffing and operational resources.

United Airlines announced that it will comply with the directive by scaling back regional and domestic mainline flights that do not connect the airline’s major hub airports. Long-haul international and hub-to-hub routes will continue operating as scheduled.

The airline said it will notify affected passengers in advance through the United app, its website, or by text message. Customers whose travel plans are disrupted — or who wish to cancel travel during this period — are eligible for full refunds, including those holding nonrefundable and Basic Economy tickets.

United added that rolling schedule updates will be made to give travelers several days’ notice of any changes.

Passengers are encouraged to check the United app or visit united.com for the latest information on flight status and travel options.
