CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (Sept. 16, 2025) – A Chillicothe man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say he banged on a cruiser stopped at a red light downtown, then struck an officer during an altercation.
According to Chillicothe Police, the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of East Main and North Mulberry streets. Officer Shane Daubenmire reported that while stopped in traffic, a man later identified as Kevin Self ran up and began hitting the rear of his patrol car before approaching the passenger side.
Daubenmire recognized Self, who had been arrested two days earlier for disorderly intoxication. Witnesses told police that Self had been drinking and yelling inside a vehicle with his mother, Jana Self, before jumping out and confronting the officer.

Police say Self ignored commands to step out of the roadway, displayed signs of intoxication, and became combative when Daubenmire attempted to arrest him. During the struggle, Self allegedly punched the officer in the face before being taken to the ground. Court security officer Rachel Efaw arrived on scene to assist with restraining him.
Daubenmire sustained minor scrapes and soreness from the scuffle but was not seriously injured.
Self was taken to the Ross County Jail on charges of assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in Chillicothe Municipal Court on Wednesday morning.
Witness statements from multiple bystanders were collected as part of the investigation.
