For Carly Atwood, a junior at Westfall, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is more than just a few days off school filled with rides, food, and friends — it’s part of who she is.
“My parents have taken me to the Pumpkin Show ever since I was a baby,” she said. “The smell of pumpkin donuts, the sound of the parade of bands, and the sight of the giant pumpkins all bring back great memories. Every October, I get to see familiar faces, spend time with family and friends, and make new memories that last a lifetime.”
Growing up in Circleville, she says the Pumpkin Show helped her appreciate her roots.
“When someone asks where I’m from, I always say, ‘Circleville — you know, like the Circleville Pumpkin Show.’ I’m proud to be part of a community with such a meaningful tradition.”
If she had to describe the event to someone who’s never been, she’d call it exactly what it is known for — The Greatest Free Show on Earth.
“The Pumpkin Show is so much more than your average fall festival,” she explained. “There are parades every day, shows on every corner, competitions, art, baking, canning, giant pumpkins, and so much more.”
One of her favorite traditions each year is working alongside her mom in the Official Pumpkin Show Souvenir Booth.
“It’s such a great opportunity to see the show through the eyes of visitors,” she said. “Watching their excitement reminds me of how special this tradition really is.”

A Heart for Kindness and Community
Among her proudest achievements is being crowned Miss Westfall, an honor chosen by her classmates.
“It means so much to be selected by people who see my character and the kindness and compassion I try to show every day,” she said.
Her biggest inspiration is her mother.
“She’s taught me everything — from simple things like brushing my teeth to big life lessons about caring for others,” she said. “She’s shown me what it means to have compassion by taking me on mission trips, filling community cupboards, and packing meals for those in need. I’ll always be grateful for her.”
Pumpkin Show Favorites
When it comes to favorite treats, she doesn’t hesitate.
“My favorite pumpkin-flavored food is the pumpkin burger,” she said with a smile. “It’s not too fancy — just a sloppy joe with a touch of pumpkin pie spice, and it’s perfect.”
Her most memorable Pumpkin Show moment happens every year in the souvenir booth.
“I love when first-time visitors ask where the giant pumpkins are,” she laughed. “I get to tell them, ‘Right behind you!’ It never gets old.”
Looking Ahead
If crowned Miss Pumpkin Show, Carly hopes to represent Circleville and its beloved tradition with pride.
“I’ve grown up here all my life, and it would be an honor to represent the Pumpkin Show and this amazing community,” she said.
Her advice to younger girls who dream of running one day:
“You’ll never know if you don’t try. As a little girl, I watched the Wednesday night parade and dreamed of being one of those girls. When I finally had the chance to run for Miss Westfall, I remembered that little girl — and I’m so glad I took the leap.”
