COLUMBUS, Ohio — Outdoor enthusiasts across the Scioto Valley can finally dust off their helmets and saddles. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry has officially reopened horseback riding trails and All-Purpose Vehicle (APV) areas at Pike, Richland Furnace, and Perry state forests.
The trails had been closed since early winter to protect the terrain during Ohio’s wettest months.
Preserving the Path
The seasonal shutdown is a strategic move by the Division of Forestry to prevent erosion and deep rutting, ensuring the trails remain sustainable for years to come. During the off-season, forestry staff and local volunteer organizations utilized the closure to perform critical maintenance and trail improvements.
“These seasonal closures help ensure our trails stay in great condition for riders,” said Dave Lane, assistant chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “We’re looking forward to reopening the trails this spring and welcoming visitors back for another season of outdoor recreation.”
Know Before You Go: 2026 Season Dates
Riders planning their spring and summer excursions should keep the following schedule in mind:
- Bridle Trails: Now open through late November 2026.
- APV Areas: Now open through early December 2026.
- Year-Round Access: For those who don’t want to wait for spring in the future, Maumee State Forest remains the only location where bridle and APV trails stay open year-round, unaffected by seasonal closures.
Supporting Ohio’s Woodlands
The Division of Forestry oversees these areas with a focus on sustainable management for both public and private woodlands. By adhering to seasonal dates, riders help the ODNR maintain a balance between active recreation and the protection of Ohio’s natural resources.
