ASHVILLE, Ohio — A 22-year-old man accused in a shooting earlier this year in Pickaway County is now set to face trial after being ruled competent to stand trial, according to recent court filings.

Derrick Weber, charged in an April 19, 2025 shooting at the Buckeye Trails mobile home park, has been returned to the Pickaway County court system following a court-ordered competency evaluation. Weber’s attorney filed the competency motion in September, temporarily pausing the case.

Weber had already been held in jail for violating the terms of his bond following his initial arrest, which stemmed from a late-night shooting incident near 10694 Ashville Pike. Deputies and Ashville police responded around 1 a.m. after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire in the area.

At the time of the incident, a resident told officers that his grandson was missing and believed to have been shot. Officers searched the area and briefly spotted a man matching the suspect’s description fleeing on foot. Roughly 10 minutes later, dispatchers received a call reporting the suspect was attempting to flee the scene in an Uber. Deputies quickly intercepted the vehicle, arrested Weber, and recovered a handgun.

Weber is charged with felonious assault and assault. Following the recent competency ruling, he is now scheduled for a court trial on January 8, 2026.

The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office has not released updates on the victim’s condition, and the incident remains under investigation.
