Landon offered to paint a free mural over offensive graffiti

Chillicothe — A local artist is offering to mural over offensive graffiti on a local recreational trail.

Landon introduced himself as a downtown organizer and participant in the monthly art show at Fifty West Brewing Company, the “Krampus Crawl,” and “Halloween in July.” He said he wanted to help with offensive graffiti on the tunnel of the Larry Cox / Paint Creek Recreational Trail under Adena Road.

Joggers enter the tunnel under Adena Road in December of 2021.

Landon described it as a “significant piece of ugliness” that gives trail users thoughts of dread, sadness, anger, and fear. He said the graffiti has words of ignorance and hate, and sexual images.

Landon said it looks like it had been painted over, but the vandals have repeated the graffiti. He said he got advice from larger cities: Graffiti is a repetitive cycle, and the only way they suggested to stop is to put up a mural. Landon pointed out that one of the rules of graffiti artists is that they won’t paint over the art of another local artist.

He said if the city is concerned about the cost, Landon will pay for it all – “for me to take the time and the finances to cover it – paint it myself – to make it something bright, beautiful and attractive, that represents our community.”

Landon said he wasn’t sure what it would look like, but it will probably be about community things, to represent the city – and he will discuss the subject matter with city leaders.

Council and the mayor pointed out that this might be outside of the city limits, but Mayor Luke Feeney said he would discuss it with Landon.

Chillicothe Parks & Recreation cares for the Larry Cox Memorial Recreational Trail within city limits, and the Ross County Park District manages the Paint Creek Recreational Trail between Chillicothe and the Ross County line.

One of the events Landon is involved in, is the Carnival De L’Arts – Art Show at Fifty West – 6 to 10pm last Mondays. “This event is all about sharing, inspiring, and connecting through art on an open platform. Bring your art to show, sell, or simply share, or just bring yourself to enjoy the creativity of others.”
