CIRCLEVILLE, OH – June 3, 2025 — A Sunday yard sale sparked by a simple idea and fueled by community generosity has turned into a powerful act of local support. American Legion Auxiliary Post 134 in Circleville donated the entire $740 raised during their inaugural community yard sale to the Pickaway County Community Action Organization (PICCA), specifically benefiting Ohio House, a transitional housing program for veterans.
The idea came from Jen, a member of the American Legion, who suggested hosting a yard sale to raise funds. What started as a modest plan quickly gained momentum through social media. “It’s unreal — the number of people from all over the community who came just to support this,” said organizers. “We had carloads of people coming in.”
All of the sale items were donated by community members who saw the event advertised on Facebook. Volunteers sorted and priced everything to move quickly, offering deals to ensure nothing went to waste. What didn’t sell is being donated to local nursing homes and the Free Store to continue the spirit of giving.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, local food vendor Smoking Sam’s parked his food truck outside, serving up breakfast and lunch to shoppers.
The event was such a success that the Legion plans to make it an annual tradition. “It was fun, and we had so much help from the community,” Jenifer Cooper said. She also mentioned that they had Diane Lester from the Free Store volunteer who helped price things quickly.
The $740 raised will go directly to Ohio House, a transitional housing program run by PICCA that currently supports 24 individuals. The program provides a safe, stable environment for veterans in need as they work toward self-sufficiency.
“The need is very great,” said a PICCA representative. “We provide food, hygiene products, bedding, pillows — everything they need when they arrive.”
How You Can Help:
PICCA is always in need of donations to support Ohio House residents. Items such as full-size hygiene products, laundry detergent, dish soap, bedding, and cash donations are welcomed and appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at the PICCA main office in Circleville.
