CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A burglary call ended in a surprising discovery on Monday afternoon after Chillicothe police officers found a suspect fast asleep in an upstairs bedroom of a vacant home.
At approximately 12:59 p.m. on October 12, 2026, officers responded to a reported active burglary at a residence on 455 East Second Street. Upon arrival, police met with the complainant, Terry Poling, who was standing near the back entrance. Poling pointed upstairs and informed officers that an intruder was currently inside sleeping in a second-floor bedroom.
A Rude Awakening
Officers entered the home and navigated to the second floor, where they located a male—later identified as Todd Bagley—lying asleep in the bed.
When Bagley began to wake up, officers announced themselves, ordered him to put his hands up, and placed him into handcuffs without incident.
After being placed in the back of a cruiser, Bagley was read his Miranda rights, waived them, and agreed to answer questions. Bagley claimed he was “just sleeping” and alleged that an acquaintance named “Chad” had shown him the property. He told officers the back door was unlocked and maintained it was his first time ever visiting the home.
Broken Locks and Felony Charges
According to Poling, who regularly checks on the property, he noticed the back storm door—which is normally left open—was shut. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that the inner door’s lock mechanism was completely missing.
Officers contacted the property owner, Samuel Poling, who confirmed that no one had permission to be inside or stay at the residence. The owner requested that full criminal charges be pressed and that Bagley be formally trespassed from the property.
Bagley was transported to the Ross County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of Burglary (ORC 2911.12).
