COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson is warning residents to be alert for storm-related scams as severe weather continues to cause damage across the state.
Recent storms have brought high winds and several inches of rain to parts of Ohio, resulting in flooding and damage to homes and other property. The aftermath can leave homeowners vulnerable to fraudulent contractors and other scammers offering repairs.
“In times of disaster, Ohioans have plenty to worry about,” Wilson said in a statement. “They don’t need fraudsters trying to capitalize on their misfortune. Those who do will be held accountable.”
Wilson’s office urged consumers to take precautions when hiring contractors following storm damage. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section has published a guide with tips for avoiding disaster-recovery scams.
Consumers can also file or search for complaints through the Ohio Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section at OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov.
Residents are encouraged to research contractors, get written estimates and contracts, and be cautious of anyone demanding immediate payment or pressuring them to make quick decisions.
