Ohio — A suspicious vehicle report in a remote area of Northwest Pickaway County led to a dramatic life-saving effort Thursday evening after a wanted man was discovered with self-inflicted wounds following a brief standoff with law enforcement.
The incident began around 8:00 p.m. when a vigilant citizen reported a suspicious vehicle hidden beneath trees and branches in the area of 13000 Crownover Mill Road. The caller provided a license plate number to 911 dispatchers, which triggered an immediate alert: the vehicle was registered to a man wanted out of Hilliard who had reportedly made previous threats to law enforcement.
A High-Stakes Discovery
When Pickaway County deputies arrived, the vehicle initially appeared to be unoccupied. However, a deputy soon spotted a male inside. Recognizing the potential danger based on the suspect’s history, the deputy called for “99 traffic” (emergency radio priority) and maintained a safe distance to contain the scene while awaiting backup.
Officers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and other local agencies arrived to assist. In an effort to gain entry to the barricaded vehicle, officers deployed “shatterballs” (non-lethal projectiles) to break the windows.
Emergency Medical Response
Once officers were able to breach the vehicle, they discovered the man suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted knife wounds to the chest.
The scene shifted instantly from a tactical standoff to a medical emergency. A Pickaway County deputy began rendering immediate first aid, applying direct pressure to deep stab wounds to stem heavy bleeding.
Due to the severity of the man’s condition, a medical helicopter was requested around 930 pm to land near the rural roadway. The suspect was stabilized on-site by paramedics before being airlifted to an emergency hospital in Columbus. He is currently listed in serious condition.
Ongoing Investigation
The identity of the man has not yet been released pending formal charges and notification of kin. Law enforcement officials credited the “concerned citizen” whose detailed 911 call allowed deputies to locate the wanted individual before the situation turned fatal.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
