ASHVILLE, Ohio — A routine stop for coffee turned life-changing for one Ashville man, who won a $1 million prize on an Ohio Lottery scratch-off ticket.

According to the Ohio Lottery, the man purchased a $1,000,000 Cashword ticket after striking out at several stores trying to find an “Extreme Millions” scratch-off. His luck changed when he stopped at a Columbus GetGo on West 3rd Avenue and decided to try a different game.

He scratched the ticket in his truck while drinking his morning coffee and quickly felt optimistic after uncovering several vowels early on. After finishing the puzzle, he initially counted 12 words—good for a $10,000 prize—but asked a coworker to double-check.

That second look changed everything.

His coworker counted 14 words, revealing the ticket’s top prize: $1 million, paid as $40,000 a year for 25 years.

Still in disbelief, the pair scanned the ticket using the Ohio Lottery mobile app, which confirmed the win. The man was so overwhelmed, he took the rest of the day off work.

He later chose the lump sum cash option of $500,000 and will receive approximately $366,250 after required state and federal taxes.

The winner said the prize will allow him to pay off his home and vehicle, and he also plans to take his wife on a vacation. He described the win as something he had always dreamed about but never thought would happen.

The $1,000,000 Cashword is a $20 scratch-off game with overall odds of 1 in 3.18. As of early April, several top prizes still remain.
