
MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A proposed RaceTrac location and community updates highlighted discussions during the Madison Township Board of Trustees meeting held March 24, 2026.
🕊️ Moment of Remembrance
The meeting opened with a moment of silence honoring victims of the recent KC-135 crash. Trustees paid special tribute to three members of the 121st Air Refueling Wing: Master Sgt. Tyler Simmons, Capt. Curtis Angst, and Capt. Seth Koval.
👏 Service Recognitions
Several township employees were recognized for milestone years of service.
- Officer Deskins, a school resource officer with Canal Winchester Schools, was honored for five years of service.
- Firefighters Bayden Chandler, Mark Grizer, and Louis Lobello were recognized for five years, while Drew Gable marked 10 years and Troy Smitherman was honored for 25 years of service.

🏪 Racetrac Proposal Moves Forward
In new business, officials confirmed that RaceTrac has applied for a liquor permit at a proposed location on London-Groveport Road. While construction has not yet begun, the site has received county zoning approval.
Township Administrator Susan Brobst recommended following standard procedure by requesting a hearing on the permit. Trustees noted that if voters approve the permit later this year, the board will revisit the request.
RaceTrac is a family-owned American convenience store chain headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, that has been serving customers since 1934. With nearly 800 retail locations across the Southern and Midwestern United States, including its franchised RaceWay brand, the company is recognized as one of the largest privately held corporations in the country. Under its tagline “Whatever Gets You Going,” RaceTrac stores offer a modern one-stop-shop experience featuring competitively priced fuel and an extensive selection of food and beverages. Many locations are known for their large-format designs that include indoor and outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, and signature offerings like “Crazy Good Coffee” and the Swirl World frozen yogurt bar.
⚡ Utility Aggregation Extension
Trustees also discussed extending an agreement with energy broker Trebel Energy, allowing the company to continue shopping for competitive gas and electric rates through May 31, 2026.
Proposed rate caps include:
- Electricity: not to exceed $0.07000/kWh
- Natural Gas: not to exceed $0.799 per Ccf
♻️ Community Events Announced
The City of Canal Winchester announced an upcoming Electronic Recycling and Drug Take Back Day scheduled for April 25 at Diley Ridge Medical Center. Residents can drop off items such as computers, phones, and accessories, with some fees applying to certain monitors and televisions.
A community shred event is also planned for October.
🚧 Department Updates
- Fire Chief Robinson said the department is reviewing and updating inspection processes and fees to ensure consistency across jurisdictions.
- Police Chief Vic Boyd announced the hiring of two new officers, Erik Flores and Ryan McCoy.
- Public Works reported ongoing pothole repairs throughout the township.
💻 ADA Compliance Efforts
Administrator Brobst also introduced updates related to new ADA compliance requirements for government websites and social media, with a deadline set for April 2027. Township staff have already begun implementing changes to meet accessibility standards.
💰 Financial Report
Fiscal Officer Laurie Vermeer reported the township has approximately $8.18 million in total cash on hand, with funds distributed across departments including fire, general operations, public works, and police.
